What is Anchor text?

The anchor text, also known as link label or link text is the visible and clickable text in a hyperlink. It is the highlighted words on a page that link to another webpage or resource. The words defined in the anchor text can determine the ranking that a page will receive by search engines. The web search engines analyze anchor text from hyperlinks on web pages. On the other hand, anchor text usually provides the user relevant descriptive or contextual information about the content of the link's destination. The anchor text may or may not be relevant to the actual content of the URL of the link.

For example, a hyperlink to the English-language Wikipedia's homepage might take this form:

<a href="">Wikipedia</a>

The anchor text in this example is "Wikipedia".

Anchor text and search engine algorithms

Anchor text is ranked highly in search engine algorithms as the linked text is related to the landing page. The major objective of search engines is to provide highly relevant search results to the users, hence use anchor texts. Webmasters use anchor texts to achieve high rankings in search engine results pages. Sometimes, website creators choose anchor text incorrectly and instead of selecting phrase similar to the content of landing page, they select words such as "Click here" or "Read more". When these kinds of similar texts are chosen, the websites can not rank within the search results displayed by search engines.

Importance of Anchor text in SEO

Using anchor texts you can get backlinks for your own website. Backlinks enable the search engines know that your site is valuable and should be displayed as the important site on the search results. A regular backlink without anchor text does not give a definite clue to the search engines about the keywords that page is targeting. The most important thing with anchor text is that it must be relevant to the content of your site to achieve higher search engine rankings for specific keywords. Also, it should be related to the pages of the links it represents. Hence, anchor text should only be used to point to URLs that are relevant to the topic of anchor text itself.
